Well-known 19th Century Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi is still one of the most popular in opera today. One of his finest pieces "Simon Boccanegra" will be performed at the Metropolitan Opera House this week in New York City with Dmitri Hvorostovsky, in the lead.
His work, although traditional, is also known to have grown bolder and more inspiring with new techniques as his career progressed. His characters are often complex and the tales about relationships between family members.
A few of his most popular are 'Rigoletto,' ,'Aida' and 'Otello.' All of which are still widely produced.
Wagner , from the 19th century too, hails from Germany. He influenced many other composers like Schoenberg and Debussy. He is most well known for his mystical production "Ring." His fantastical sets were so spectacular they will long be remembered as works of art themselves.
